Discord Tips and Tricks

First Ask... Do You REALLY Want To Have A Server?

A Discord server can be a lot of work, but they are also a great way of connecting with your community and help you grow. The main thing you have to ask yourself is if you really want to make a server. If you end up taking a break from streaming that's fine, but still don't abandon your server. You need to be active in it and chatting. Even if you are only going to chat to one other person in there do it! The moment YOU stop chatting and disappear from the server the moment the server dies. Your interaction with the server is super important especially as a streamer because this is where your community gets to hang out and get to know you better.

Channels

  • Make sure your most important channels, such as rules, is at the top of your channels. These will be what your members see first constantly so they need to be visible.
  • Have an announcement channel for when you go LIVE! Having a specific space where all your go live notifications are helps keep things organized and easy access.
  • Jazz up the names of channels: To add a little more fun to the channels try adding emojis and symbols!
  • Have a spot for your schedule: Just like with the announcements this will allow a easy access and organization of your schedule.
  • Make channels based on what you and your community need and want. Don't have dead channels. If it isn't being used, remove it. If it can be combined with another channel, do so.
  • Your channels WILL CHANGE. Don't be afraid of redoing things. Find what works best for you and your community and go with it. While you can purchase server templets and such you never know if its going to benefit you and your community best. Take examples from other servers you're apart of and build off that.

Roles

  • Roles are a super fun way to express yourself and add some fun to the server. You can use transparent roles to make dividers between all the other roles to make things more organized. You can do this by having spaces or symbols with your divider name in the middle and making the role color #0000, then placing it above the roles you want under that section.

  • Have roles that allow people to express themselves

  • Make sure your twitch account is connected so your subscribers can have a role based off the Tier they are subbed with! This adds a little something extra for those people supporting you.

  • Have a special role for your VIPS

  • Add fun badges for your roles!

  • Try to keep the colors eye friendly. While most people can change their discord background having colors that are going to be visible on members names should have an eye friendly color so you can still see their name in the chat.

BOTS

Bots are a great way to add that extra fluff to your server. These are the main two I use in mine.

PatchBot

PatchBot is a super nice bot to help keep you updated on games patch notes right to your server!

  • Pros: You can use it mainly for FREE
  • You can subscribe to all supported games

  • Cons: Unless you buy premium there will be sponsored messages after receiving patch notes at times.

Premium Includes

  1.  Game updates can go to multiple channels
  2. Mention Roles when PatchBot updates a channel
  3. Use Threads, Forums, and Voice channels
  4. Pinned Messages
  5. Priority Distribution

Community

Mee6 used to be one of the best bots out there that could be used for Free, now its not really recommended for Free users as its starting to put things behind multiple paywalls and subscriptions.

Premium Cost $85 for a one time life time payment.

Pros: It has a lot of different features and allows for a lot of features under one bot.

Cons: You basically have to have premium to do anything and even then some extra features are locked behind a subscription where you don't have a life time payment ability.

Note: Research bots and find what is going to work best  for your needs. There is no need spending money on bots when you might not need their features.
